Honoring the Life and Impact of a Beloved UNC Basketball Icon Beyond the Court


 

A heartfelt tribute to the life and impact of Eric Montross, UNC basketball icon and beloved community leader

Chapel Hill, N.C. - On Sunday, December 17, the Montross family shared the sad news of Eric Montross's passing at his Chapel Hill home, surrounded by loved ones. Diagnosed with cancer in March 2023, Eric faced his battle with the determination and grace that defined his life.

In their announcement, the family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from friends and the medical community, especially the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center. Known for his kindness, Eric's legacy, shaped by

a generous and thoughtful life, will continue to touch the lives of those he encountered.

The family has requested privacy during this challenging time.

A Tar Heel on and off the Court

Eric Montross, a pivotal player for UNC from 1990-94, was an integral part of the Tar Heels' 1993 NCAA championship-winning team. Coached by the legendary Dean Smith, Montross's impact extended beyond the court. Named first-team All-ACC in 1993, he earned recognition on the John Wooden All-America team and received NCAA East Region and Final Four all-tournament honors.

Following his college success, Montross enjoyed an eight-season NBA career after being a first-round draft pick by the Boston Celtics. Later, he became a familiar voice as the analyst on the Tar Heel Sports Network for 18 seasons. Additionally, he served as the senior major gifts director at the Rams Club.

Carolina Mourns the Loss

Carolina Athletics expressed profound sadness at the loss of Eric Montross, highlighting his contributions as a player, student, and community ambassador. Beyond his basketball achievements, Montross helped secure scholarships for student-athletes and became a dedicated supporter of the Lineberger Center's fight against cancer.

UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz mourned the loss of a friend and advocate, emphasizing Montross's impactful leadership beyond the basketball court. Coach Hubert Davis echoed the sentiment, expressing devastation at the loss of a friend and teammate who loved being a Tar Heel.

A Giant On and Off the Court

Former UNC head coach Roy Williams paid tribute to Montross, acknowledging his greatness on the basketball court but emphasizing his larger-than-life presence outside of it. Williams expressed love for the man who transcended the game.

In memory of Eric Montross, the Tar Heel community mourns a legend who touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on the University and Chapel Hill.
